About

About Paul Bentley

Paul Bentley started his garden design career in 1982 when he began training at multiple colleges to build up his landscaping and design skills. This included three years at Merrist Wood Horticultural College, a year at Brinsbury College and another year at The Garden Design School.

Equipped with five years of training, Paul then launched his first landscaping business in the early 90s while still working as a fire officer. The reputation of Paul and his landscapers soon blossomed and the company was celebrated for their innovative approach to garden design, along with their exceptional workmanship and commitment to outstanding customer service.

As an established garden designer with over 30 years’ experience, Paul has transformed hundreds of gardens throughout Exeter, Devon, the South West and the South East, thanks to his bespoke designs and dedication to each and every client. It’s Paul’s passion and skill for landscaping that has seen him become a BALI (British Association of Landscapes Industries) and Society of Garden Designers member and has worked on projects all across the UK and Europe.

Whether you have the first seeds of an idea or are looking for guidance from a professional, Paul will be glad to discuss and develop your ideas into a detailed plan.

Process

The Design Process

  • 1. Initial Consultation

Paul will arrange an initial consultation on a date that is suitable for you.

The consultation will address all aspects and features that you, the client, wish to achieve in your garden such as alfresco dining or just a place to relax and unwind from a hard week’s work. We will also discuss the best way to cover the topographical survey.

From this initial meeting Paul will return to the office and supply a quotation for all aspects of the survey and design

  • 2. Survey

This is the stage where the most important aspect of the design is created. Depending on the size and complexity of the survey this will either be completed in-house by Paul or it will be completed by an external topographical surveyor.

  • 3. Client Brief

A detailed client brief will be typed up from the initial consultation and from a questionnaire that will be sent out to you, the client. This design brief will then be sent to you to check, and to add or remove any further information. It is from this detailed client brief that the creation of the design will be born.

  • 4. Concept Design

A detailed concept design will be created based on the client brief, and this will be made using CAD (Computer Aided Design) and sent to you in PDF format. At all stages of the design, Paul may send progress PDF files for your review, and this will depend on the size, complexity and design brief.

Once the concept design has been created then colour will be added to give depth to the project. The concept design will be fully labelled and complete with a mood board of landscape materials chosen for the project.

  • 5. Planting Plan

A detailed planting plan will be produced on CAD, based on the client brief, soil type and pH, your colour schemes, and any other important features and specifications, such as the omission of plants which are poisonous to dogs or planting to create a wildlife friendly garden etc.

A planting schedule will be produced giving botanical names, common names, quantities, sizes, and from this a plant mood board will be produced. Sourcing of plants can also be carried out on your behalf if required.

  • 6. Other Drawings

If chosen as part of the package, Paul will produce the following design drawings:

    • Construction details of all elements of the project to assist construction companies
    • Cross section elevation drawings to show the levels of the project
    • Lighting design drawings to bring out a new atmosphere to the garden at night
    • Irrigation design drawings, mains or form rainwater harvesting
    • Drawings for the landscape construction companies to set out the project.
  • 7. Specification of Works

A detailed Specification of Works document which will include, but not limited to, the following:

    • Specification of insurances
    • Specification of working procedures and times
    • Site constraints and rules
    • Specification of hard landscaping materials
    • Specification of soft landscaping materials
    • British Standards required on materials and procedures
  • 8. Project Management

Paul can offer a full Project Management service to oversee the implementation of the design and ensure all procedures are being followed, including, but not limited to:

    • Insurance Documentation
    • Health and Safety
    • Construction Processes
    • Quality of workmanship
    • Material quality
    • Tidiness of the site

Paul has NVQ L7 in Site Senior Management (Master’s degree level) so has all the qualities and attributes to manage your project successfully.

Fees for Project Management are generally 16% of the landscape contractors’ fee and paid in accordance with the fee structure agreed with the clients prior to engaging the contractor.
